Dia adalah John Carpenter. Seorang pria kelahiran 1968 yang berasal dari Hamden, Connecticut. Dia adalah seorang lulusan ekonomi Universitas Rutgers di tahun 1990. Dia berumur 31 tahun tepatnya, saat memenangkan mega kuis ini. Hari itu, 18 November 1999.
Tak disangka-sangka ketika seluruh penonton mulai berharap-harap cemas. John memutuskan untuk mengambil pilihan bantuan Phone A Friend. Dia menelepon ayahnya. Terjadilah sebuah dialog yang menarik :
Regis Philbin (Host): “John you’ve got thirty seconds, starts right now”
John: “Uh…Hi, Dad.”
Tom (Ayah John): “Hi!”
John: “Um…I don’t really need your help, I just wanted to let you know that I’m gonna win the million dollars”
(penonton mulai tertawa sambil memberikan tepuk tangan yang meriah)
John: “Er… because the U.S. President that appeared on ‘Laugh-In’ is Richard Nixon. That’s my final answer”
Regis: “Well, my gosh. What can I say except: Debbie (Carpenter’s wife), you’re going to Paris, and this is the final answer heard all around the world, he’s won a million dollars!”
